Polyimides are an advanced polymeric material used in high voltage insulation system, electrical wires and electronic devices due to its power and ability to withstand extreme temperatures without breaking or being damaged. It is an excellent electrical insulator which prevents electricity from causing harm.
Polyimides possess outstanding properties such as low dielectric constant, low dissipation factor (low dielectric loss), high dielectric strength, and low conductivity. As the need for new composite insulators and electronic applications continues to skyrocket, polyimides are receiving more attention from both researchers and industry. They are used to develop polymer-based components with better mechanical properties for electrical insulation.
Nonetheless, challenges still exist, such as low interfacial interaction and high cost in processing. This has caused lower production and reduced performance of polyimide for thermal and electrical insulation. To address the deficiencies in polyimide and composites, researchers are now using reinforcement fillers (nanotechnology) to enhance the characteristics of polyimide for multipurpose insulation applications.
Do you know which nanofillers are employed to make polyimide even stronger?
